Build it Right

I used to sit with Dad out in his old workshop
Tools hanging from the walls Mom’ s picture on the bench top
We’ d talk about the Dodgers and laugh at jokes we’ d heard
He’ d go on ‘ bout the old days and I’ d hang on every word

I recall one evening sitting on the sawdust bin
And telling him about the love I felt for Jessie Lynn
I said, “Dad, she means the world to me, I think she’s the one”
And when I asked him how to make love last like he and Mom had done

He said, love is like this table, made from the finest oak
Four legs hold it up— faith, passion, joy and hope
Every joint is solid and every seam is tight
It’ll last a lifetime if you build it right

It’ s seven years and countin’ since Jess became my bride
Though we have our ups and downs we’ re always side by side
And when we sit down with our kids at that table Daddy made
We always count our blessings for the precious gifts he gave

He said, love is like this table, made from the finest oak
Four legs hold it up, faith, passion, joy and hope
Every joint is solid, every seam is tight
It’ll last a lifetime if you build it right
